Evo Morales Attacked in Bolivia, Driver Injured

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales reported that his vehicle was shot at 14 times by unknown assailants, injuring his driver, following a political conflict.

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales denounced that unknown assailants fired at his vehicle and injured his driver while he was on his way to the station where he hosts a weekend program. The incident occurred on the route between Villa Tunari and Lauca Ñ, in the Tropic of Cochabamba. Morales described that two or three trucks were following them and that his driver tried to evade them, without success. The former leader stated that they counted at least 14 shots during the attack.

In a video filmed by a passenger in the vehicle, it can be seen how Morales and his companions were alerted to the gunfire and the need to change transportation due to a tire damaged by bullets. At the time of the attack, the driver was injured in the head and the vehicle suffered damage.

After the incident, Evo Morales held the government of Luis Arce responsible for what happened and accused his pursuers of attempting to kill him. The events took place amid a roadblock by Morales's supporters demanding the withdrawal of judicial proceedings against him, which they consider part of a political persecution.

This incident occurs in a context of tension in Bolivia, with protests led by Morales demanding solutions to various issues, such as the economic crisis and respect for his unique candidacy for next year's elections. The Bolivian Foreign Ministry has denounced to the international community that these protests seek to disrupt democratic order, while President Arce has relieved the high military command to preserve internal stability and democracy in the country.
