New Leaders Emerge in Bolivia's Elections

Regional elections were held in Bolivia to elect governors and mayors. Alliances backed by President Rodrigo Paz won in the departments of La Paz, Tarija, and Beni, but did not achieve favorable results in key areas such as Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. According to data from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), nine governors and mayors of the country's ten main capitals were elected. In some cities, including Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, and El Alto, winners were determined with a significant majority. In capital cities like Sucre, Oruro, Potosí, Cobija, Trinidad, and Tarija, the difference between the top two candidates is narrow, so the electoral body announced that official results must be awaited. According to regulations, a candidate wins a governorship if they secure 50% of the vote plus one or at least 40% with a 10% lead over the second-place candidate. If these conditions are not met, a runoff election will be held in mid-April. Regarding governors, with 60% of the count, Luis Revilla of the Alianza Patria Sol alliance is leading in La Paz with 21.18% of the vote, holding an advantage over the second-place force, Innovación Humana, and a runoff is anticipated. In the southern Tarija region, with 94% of the count, Adrián Oliva of Unidad por la Patria secured 35.54% of the support, while the second-place force, Cambio Democrático por el Cambio, with María René Soruco as its candidate, garnered 28.81%. In the Amazonian department of Beni, with 96% of the count, Tito Egüez, candidate of Alianza Patria Unidos, achieved 36.81%, far ahead of the second-place candidate. In Santa Cruz, with 93% of the count, the surprise came from the former vice-presidential candidate and candidate for the Libre alliance, Juan Pablo Velasco, with 28.55%, followed closely by lawyer Otto Ritter with 26.69%. The current governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, obtained 21.94%. In the Cochabamba department, with 92% of the count, Leonardo Loza, a former senator and loyal follower of former President Evo Morales, took the lead with 38.46%. In Potosí, the candidate of Alianza Social, René Joaquino, summed up 42.76%, a percentage with which he is practically the elected governor, while in Oruro, Edgar Sánchez of the emerging force Jacha leads (35.15%), and in the Amazonian region of Pando, Libre Pando's candidate Gabriela de Paiva is leading by a large margin with 46.53%. In Chuquisaca, a runoff is also anticipated between candidates Luis Ayllón of the Alianza Gente Nueva alliance (34.91%) and Franz García of Alianza Patria Unidos (33.97%). The election of mayors is decided by a simple majority. In the city of La Paz, with 56.2% of the ballots counted, César Dockweiler of the Innovación Humana group is leading with 23.25% of the vote.
