Numerous accusations of alleged corruption have been exposed in the political and judicial spheres against the president of the Supreme Court of Justice, María Eugenia López.
The management of the current president of the Court is undergoing a period of increasing public scrutiny amid complaints and challenges that have reignited the debate on transparency, judicial independence, and the management of public resources within the Judicial Branch.
The debate has intensified following recent statements by Karisma Karamañites and the dissemination on social networks of complaints about alleged irregularities in high-profile rulings, which has revived doubts about the credibility and institutional communication of the Judicial Branch.
The former president of the National College of Lawyers, Juan Carlos Araúz, warned that it is necessary to differentiate between media debates and those that, within the justice system, must meet formal parameters to have legal effects. However, he stated that the institutional silence in the face of public scrutiny deepens public distrust.
Araúz pointed to the lack of an institutional spokesperson capable of responding to public challenges, explaining sensitive decisions, and clarifying facts that affect the image of the judicial system.
Meanwhile, constitutional lawyer Miguel Antonio Bernal warned about the seriousness of publications that allege the existence of a criminal organization dedicated to extortion and blackmail that may have influenced high-profile judicial decisions, and urged the formation of a special investigative commission.
Additionally, he recalled that María Eugenia López's term at the helm of the Court is about to end, which could bring new changes to the Judicial Branch.
López has also faced complaints before the National Assembly for alleged crimes of document falsification, fraud, and crimes against the public administration, as well as criticism over the contracting of an armored vehicle and the salary increase that raised the magistrates' salaries to $14,000 per month amid a difficult economic situation for the country.
