Elected Bolivian President Announces New Economic Policy

The elected president of Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz Pereira, stated that “the era of living off the state is over,” a message intended to distance himself from the model of the outgoing administration. The 58-year-old politician, who won the elections with 54.96% of the vote in the country's first runoff, is preparing for his inauguration on November 8 with an agenda focused on production, investment, and opening up to world trade. “We will attend to all sectors, but it is necessary that they understand that now, whoever wants to relate to the State must do so through production,” Paz Pereira manifested on his social networks. The elected president insisted that his management will be more pragmatic than ideological to attract investments, and he extended his hand to all political and business sectors. “Bolivia needs work, production, and commerce,” he stated, according to a report from the Xinhua news agency. On the international front, Paz Pereira seeks to project an image of openness and balance, which is why he is traveling with his economic team to the United States to hold this week meetings with multilateral organizations and officials of the Donald Trump administration to obtain financial support. Paz stated in different interviews that Bolivia is going to seek cooperation with the United States, China, and Europe. Meanwhile, the government transition between the outgoing administration of Luis Arce and David Choquehuanca and the future administration of Rodrigo Paz Pereira and Edman Lara is being carried out in accordance with Supreme Decree Number 5475, which allows for the activities and ceremonial acts necessary for the transfer of power.
