Tragic Bus Accident in Potosí Claims 31 Lives

A tragic bus accident in Potosí, Bolivia, resulted in 31 fatalities and 15 injuries. The bus fell into an 800-meter gorge after losing control. Rescue efforts are ongoing.


In Bolivia, a tragic accident occurred this Monday in which at least 31 people lost their lives and another 15 were injured. The incident took place in the Andean region of Potosí, when a San José interprovincial transport bus went off the road and fell into a ravine of about 800 meters near the town of Yocalla.

According to the spokesperson for the Potosí Departmental Police Command, Limberth Choque, the bus, which was covering the route from Potosí to Oruro, was involved in this tragic accident. After receiving the report, a rescue operation was deployed, which managed to save 15 injured people, while 31 unfortunately died in the incident.

Rescue teams, including firefighters and paramedics, worked hard to recover the bodies of the victims and transfer them to the public hospital morgue in Potosí. It was mentioned that the road where the accident occurred is steep and full of curves, which combined with the alleged high speed at which the bus was traveling, may have been a determining factor in the tragedy.

Among the 15 injured, there are four children who are in critical condition and receiving treatment in intensive care for fractures in various parts of their bodies. The adult injured have fractures and other injuries that require further evaluations to determine the severity of their conditions.

Specialized traffic accident agents remain at the scene to conduct investigations and determine the circumstances that led to the bus's fall. This tragic incident adds to the concerning statistic of around 1,400 deaths and 40,000 injuries recorded annually in road accidents in Bolivia, where most of these events are attributed to preventable human failures.
