Jeanine Áñez Declares Political Prisoner Status

Former interim president of Bolivia, Jeanine Áñez, spoke from prison asserting her innocence and expressing her love for the country. Áñez, who took command after Evo Morales resigned in 2019, stated that she fights for the unity of Bolivia and against the MAS regime, which she accuses of promoting division and totalitarian socialism.

From Áñez's perspective, her assumption of the presidency was the result of a succession mechanism activated after Morales's resignation, who reported a coup against him. The former president was arrested in 2021 amid accusations related to her transitional presidency and in 2022 received a 10-year prison sentence for illegally placing herself in the line of succession in 2019.

The trial against Áñez for "coup d'état I" progressed with accusations against figures like Luis Fernando Camacho and Marco Pumari, leaders of the post-electoral protests in 2019. Áñez was excluded from this process because she had been tried in the case "coup d'état II." The former president has expressed her desire for a special trial as a former president and has filed complaints with international organizations, considering herself a political prisoner of the MAS.

In addition to these cases, Áñez faces multiple judicial proceedings, including those related to the deaths of civilians during the 2019 crisis. Amid internal tensions in the MAS between the country's president, Luis Arce, and Evo Morales, the definition of the official candidate for 2025 continues to be a source of conflict.

Jeanine Áñez has recalled the anniversary of her assumption of the presidency and her subsequent imprisonment, reaffirming her commitment to democracy and freedom. The former ruler claims that those responsible for the electoral fraud of 2019 will face justice and denounces being a victim of violence from groups affiliated with the MAS.
