Former Bolivian President Evo Morales submitted his resignation from the political party Movement for Socialism (MAS) on Thursday, February 27, through a notarized power of attorney submitted by his representative to the Departmental Electoral Tribunal (TED) of Cochabamba.
According to the local media La Razón Digital Bolivia, Héctor Rodríguez, legal representative of the former Bolivian president, confirmed that the resignation from MAS was formally submitted, and they are waiting for the Electoral Authority to admit it in the coming days.
Days earlier, on Tuesday, February 25, Evo Morales attempted to execute his resignation from MAS; however, the Electoral Authority rejected it because the action was not performed in person, but by a delegate representing the member, and lacked a notarized power of attorney.
Evo Morales made the decision to resign from MAS after signing an agreement with the party Front for Victory (FPV), with which he intends to participate in the general elections on August 17.
Evo Morales has been considered a key figure within the ruling party in Bolivia, especially during his time as president and leader of the Movement for Socialism-Political Instrument for the Sovereignty of the Peoples (MAS-IPSP).
MAS is a political party founded by Evo Morales himself and was considered the main ruling force in the country during his government, as well as during the term of his successor, Luis Arce.
With his resignation from MAS, Evo Morales makes it clear that he is bidding farewell to the ruling party while the Electoral Authority examines the documentation submitted by the former Bolivian president to verify its legality and proceed with the disaffiliation process.
According to La Razón Digital Bolivia, the electoral authority indicated that, in two days, at least 1,686 people resigned from MAS since Monday, February 24, as supporters of the former president began the disaffiliation process from the ruling party after the signing of the agreement between Evo Morales and the leadership of FPV.
Since October 2024, when the justice system issued an arrest warrant and froze Evo Morales' accounts for human trafficking with aggravating circumstances, an investigation that is being carried out by the Public Ministry, the former president has been sheltered in a locality in the Tropic of Cochabamba, in Chimoré, Bolivia.
